چکیده

In this note we consider two S-unit equations for which we will exhibit many solutions. Our first problem concerns solutions to the equation a + b = c where a, b, and c are coprime integers such that all prime factors of abc lie in a given set S of s primes. In [8] J.-H. Evertse showed that this S-unit equation has at most exp(4s+ 6) solutions. On the other hand, in [6] P. Erdős, C. Stewart, and R. Tijdeman showed that there exist arbitrarily large sets S such that the S-unit equation a + b = c has more than exp((4− ǫ) √

A pr 2 00 9 Dynamics of Periodic Monopoles

BPS monopoles which are periodic in one of the spatial directions correspond, via a generalized Nahm transform, to solutions of the Hitchin equations on a cylinder. A one-parameter family of solutions of these equations, representing a geodesic in the 2monopole moduli space, is constructed numerically. It corresponds to a slow-motion dynamical evolution, in which two parallel monopole chains co...

About twenty years ago, V. P. Maslov [1] put forward the idea that numerous quasilinear hyperbolic systems have only finite number of singular solution in general position. These solutions are shock waves, “infinitely narrow” solitons and point singularities of the type of the square root of a quadratic form. He has also stated conjecture that such solutions for shallow water equation can descr...

Among other things we show that for each n-tuple of positive rational numbers (a 1 ,. .. , a n) there are sets of primes S of arbitrarily large cardinality s such that the solutions of the equation a 1 x 1 +· · ·+a n x n = 1 with x 1 ,. .. , x n S-units are not contained in fewer than exp((4 + o(1))s 1/2 (log s) −1/2) proper linear subspaces of C n. This generalizes a result of Erd˝ os, Stewart...

We discuss general 2-fluid hydrodynamic equations for complex fluids, where one kind is a simple Newtonian fluid, while the other is either liquid-crystalline or polymeric/elastomeric, thus being applicable to lyotropic liquid crystals, polymer solutions, and swollen elastomers. The procedure can easily be generalized to other complex fluid solutions. Special emphasis is laid on such nonlineari...
